Chapter Nineteen

It was after dark, and the sky was full of stars when Morvan, and one of his men, marched a bound and bloodied Karl to the great wooden doors of the palace. He hammered on the gates with the handle of his dagger and heard voices and movement on the other side, but it took them a long time to lift the two heavy wooded bars and open one of the gates. Two guards appeared and looked them up and down.

‘Who are you to be hammering on the doors of the Ibn Hud Palace at night?’ the taller guard asked in a derisory tone.

‘We are hoping that Sheikh Ishmael is here for we have something he wants very badly. We have captured the slave that led the slave rebellion in Tarragona.’ So saying, Morvan pushed Karl to his knees. Blood still trickled from Karl’s eyebrow where Chatillon had hit him to make it look realistic for his plan—far too hard, in Karl’s opinion.

‘The Sheikh is not here, but we will summon Sayyid Al Cazar if he has not retired.’

One guard went off to report while the other man yawned, as Morvan pulled Karl roughly to his feet and pushed him through the gates and into the outer courtyard. It was some time before the guard returned, but he waved them forward.

Before the man had time to breathe a warning, Chatillon had grabbed him by the neck and in one swift movement, pushed the man’s head sharply backwards with his forearm and snapped his neck. A useful move that rarely failed, taught to him by Gervais de la Ferte many years before when he was a young man in Paris. The guard’s body slumped to the ground and was dragged into the shadows. Chatillon waved in a dozen of his heavily armed men, and they moved stealthily into the palace grounds, weaving their way through the fountains and plants.

Chatillon knew that his men would be over the wall at the back of the palace, dealing quickly and quietly with any guards, and opening the small postern gate to let the rest of the men into the grounds. Karl had told them there were two doors to the barrack block, one at either end.

‘We will stand ready in the shadows here, and when the others come into sight, we will attack through both doors at once in perfect silence. I do not want to hear the clash of a blade unless it cannot be avoided. We expect a full contingent of twenty or more men to be there, so split up and be quick and accurate. I want none left alive to cause us problems later.’

They nodded, and moments later, they attacked with as much
